Compact SlimLiner for the reconstruction of pressure pipes
We present the principal of the technology in this animation film. A pipe folded into C-shape, protected by a foil will be pulled into the old pipe. Then the liner will be inflated by water pressure. The protecting foild become stretched and so the protection of the pipe remains. The result is a close-fit liner. The liner is a thin walled pipe isolating the potable water from the old host pipe, thus improving the water quality and preventing leakage and further corrosion. Of course the flow capacity of the pipeline improves as well.
Prevents corrosion and leakage for a long time
Compact SlimLiner is a cost effective, thin walled polyethylene pipe system for the trenchless reconstruction of pressure pipes of nominal diameter 75-300 mm (from 2003 upto 600 mm). It is an optimal solution in all cases where the pipe is still load bearing and shows only smaller defects (e.i. smaller holes, untight sockets, spot corrosion). The flow capacity noticeably improves - thanks to the smooth surface - while the reduction of the diameter is minimal. And what is even more important in the case of potable water lines, is that the consumer receives a healthy and clear water. The following film shows the bearing capacity of the Compact SlimLiner, which ensures the overlapping of missing pipewalls of more centimeters at a pressure of 60 bar.
The best quality in no time
Thanks to the well approved material polyethylene and the fully developed close-fit technology, the accepted lifetime of the pipelines reconstructed by the Compact SlimLiner method is minimum 100 years. And all that accompanied by low costs of material and installation, as there is no need of expensive special equipments for the installation of the thin walled pipe. One working day is enough for the complete reconstruction of a section including all connections.
Advantages
- Prevents corrosion and leakage for a long time as well as sediments.
- Improves the water quality.
- Extends the lifetime of the existing pipe network by 100 years.
- Increases the flow capacity
- Simple and quick installation by using standard equipments.
- A section of about 1000 m can be reconstructed in one shot.
- Earthwork is limited to smaller starting and receiving shafts.
- Simple and quick execution of house connections.
- The environment, the inhabitants, the traffic as well the water and gas supply are disturbed only to a minimal extent.
- Low material and installation costs.
- Free of dissolvation, recycable, environmental friendly.
In the case of steel and cast iron pipes the following defects can appear:
- corrosion causing leakage
- leakage at the joints can be a result of ground motion
- incrustation develops in many of the steel and cast iron pipes. The rust developed as an influence of the oxygene in water and the mineral substances can develop a big layer of sediments. This can cause a heavy reduction of the flow capacity (low pressure at the water taps) and a lower water quality
- pipes of asbestos cement and soft water can also cause a lot of problems because the cement dissolves and asbestos fibres get into the drinking water
Installation
Compact SlimLiner will be pulled by a winch into the pipe section to be reconstructed. The velocity of pulling is between 10-20 m/minute. Up to the condition of the pipeline it is possible to pull in even a length of 1000 m at one shot. The plastic foil wound around the pipe, fixes its folded shape and protects it from demages.
The pulling head
A pulling head will be fastened to the end of the liner thus enabling a pulling-in into the pipe to be reconstructed. The pulling head protects the liner from dirts/pollution. We can use different pulling heads. One possible solution is to use a pulling head made of steel plates like a sandwich or we fasten two plastic rods to a wire cable. The plastic rods will be pushed into the linerpipe and fastened by a through bolt to it. In this case the liner pipe gets contaminated, therefore a subsequent cleaning is necessary.
Inflation
After being pulled in, the pipe ends get compressed. The necessary connections for water and air are made at the pipewall. As a general rule we can recommend the use of water for the reversion/inflation process, however if the diameter of the liner pipe is 100 mm or bigger and we have taken all necessary precautions at both pipe ends, we can use air as well.
Reversion of the pipe is made at normal temperature, just by pressure. The necessary pressure rate lies between 2-4 bars. The foil winded around the liner pipe does not get torn but stretches, thus protecting the pipe when fitting into the old pipe.
Compact end fitting
The development of the special Compact end fitting has got into the final stage and the first technical trial has taken place. A metal ring made of stainless steel is put into the old pipe. After reversion the liner pipe will be cut to size and trimmed off. We put the Compact end fitting into the liner pipe and fix it. The whole procedure does not take more than 10 minutes. The Compact end fitting has got a PE pipe end of standard size - the following sizes are available: 75, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 mm - which can be welded to standard pipes and fittings.
Elektofittings
The diameter of old pipes of steel, asbestos cement and cast iron means usually the inside diameter. This means that for example a pipe of 100 mm can be connected to a standard PE pipe of 110 mm. The Compact end fitting can be a solution for this problem. An other solution is the application of welding by electrofitting. First we put a caliber into the pipe and then we widen the liner pipe and the caliber up to the diameter required. At last we make the normal welding by the electrofitting.
Joints
If we wish to make a house connection we can use a ferrule. Its place should be indicated before inflating the SlimLiner. If the wall thickness of the old pipe is at least 8 mm, we can place this directly into the old pipe by using a threaded connection of 1". If the material of the old pipe is asbestos cement or thinwalled steel, we have to place first a ferrule with a threaded connection of 1". The ferrule should be screwed into it. The outlet opening at the liner pipe will be cut under pressure by using the drilling ferrule, at the same time we fix the wall of the SlimLiner between the clamps of the drilling profile, thus providing the perfect watertightness. The connection must be provided till the liner pipe is under pressure. The ferrule of 1" creates a so-called "banjo"- connection of 3".

There are the following markings on the Compact SlimLiner pipes:
Manufacturer, name of the product, field of application, material, nominal diameter, SDR, date of production, length, number of production line, shift code/material code
For example: Wavin, Compact SlimLiner, water, PE 80 (MRS 8.0) H005, DN 150, SDR 51, =020118=, 00103, =34= 067856

Quality management
Products of Wavin are subject to a double quality control. The row material will be controlled by the manufacturer according to very strict rules, the product during production and the finished product are controlled according to special Wavin standards, which conform minimum to the requirements of the valid international standards (prEN 14409-3). Controls will be made continuously by independent quality control institutions as well.
